Alex Ovechkin will pick up another piece of hardware to add to a collection that includes the Stanley Cup and the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy.

The Washington Capitals’ captain won “best male athlete” at the 2018 ESPYS, ESPN’s annual sports awards show. Ovechkin is the first hockey player to win the award since the ESPYS began in 1993.

He beat out Tom Brady, James Harden and Jose Altuve to do so.

His NHL-leading 49-goal season combined with his first Stanley Cup made his candidacy particularly strong in an awards ceremony that frequently overlooks the sport of hockey.

Ovechkin was not present at the ceremony in Los Angeles to accept the award.
