Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen will miss at least the next 10 games and 24 days after Washington placed him on long-term injured reserve with an upper body injury.

In his absence, the Capitals promoted defenseman Madison Bowey from Hershey, the team’s American Hockey League affiliate.

Niskanen left Friday’s game against the New Jersey Devils in the second period. The loss is a huge blow to the Capitals, given Washington’s thin-depth on the blue line and Niskanaen’s status as a No.1 defenseman.

The earliest Niskanen will be eligible to return is Nov. 7 at Buffalo.

Bowey, meanwhile, made a strong push to make the Capitals roster in training camp, but was among the team’s last cuts. He will most likely make his debut Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
