The Man of Steel’s debut on the silver screen is now recognized by the U.S. government as an iconic entry in American motion-picture history.
On Wednesday the Library of Congress announced the addition of the 1978 blockbuster “Superman,” along with 24 other movies, to the National Film Registry.
Other popular movies making the cut included the 1985 action-comedy “The Goonies,” 1989’s “Field of Dreams,” the 1997 James Cameron-directed epic “Titanic,” and, just in time for Christmas, the 1988 Bruce Willis blockbuster “Die Hard.”
The registry’s class of 2017 is also notable for entries that were seminal pieces of social commentary for their time, including 1967’s “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” 1947’s “Gentleman’s Agreement” and 1979’s “Boulevard Nights,” dealing with interracial romance, anti-Semitism and the troubled lives of East L.A. Chicano youths, respectively.
“The selection of a film to the National Film Registry recognizes its importance to American cinema and the nation’s cultural and historical heritage,” Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said in a statement. “Our love affair with motion pictures is a testament to their enduring power to enlighten, inspire and inform us as individuals and a nation as a whole. Being tasked with selecting only 25 each year is daunting because there are so many great films deserving of this honor.”
As part of its effort to engage the public on film preservation and the cultural importance of the film registry, Ms. Hayden joined film critic Leonard Maltin Wednesday night on a special program on Turner Classic Movies to discuss the registry and this year’s entries, the library said in a statement.
The library also encourages Americans to join in the discuss on social media by following it on Twitter on its @libraryofcongress account and by using the hashtag #NatFilmRegistry.
